Umpqua Discovery Center
Step inside the Umpqua Discovery Center on Reedsport’s riverfront and take a journey through time in Tidewaters & Time. The adventure begins with stories around a campfire from the Kuuich Indians. Learn about the early explorers, such as Jedediah Smith. Watch videos of logging as it was done in the past and walk through a fish cannery. Visit a 1900’s tidewater town and listen as the pioneers tell their tales.
Your adventure continues as you hike the indoor trail of Pathways to Discovery and learn about the plants and animals of tidewater country. Walk through the estuary at sunrise and then into the deep forest where you can slide into the bear cave and learn about hibernating bears. The path will lead you to the weather station that has interactive OMSI exhibits on rain, wind and atmosphere. The journey continues to a high mountain meadow on a spring afternoon, and then to a summer sunset on the dunes. At the end of the trail is the Subterranean Education Room where there are videos of elk, bats, sand and dunes.
Peer through the 35-foot periscope. Find educational and unique items in the center gift shop. With life-size murals and realistic sounds at every turn, there’s lots to discover. Fun for all ages.
